Terms of Service

1. Introduction

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Pressa platform at pressa.dev, including the REST API, CLI tool, MCP server, and web dashboard (collectively, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Service Description

Pressa is a Compile-as-a-Service platform. You submit LaTeX source code or structured JSON data, and Pressa returns compiled, professionally formatted PDF documents. The Service is accessible via REST API, a command-line interface (CLI), and an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for AI agent integration.

3. Account Terms

• You must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
• You must provide accurate and complete information during registration.
• You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and API keys.
• You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account or API keys.
• You must notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized use of your account.
• One person or entity may not maintain more than one free account.

4. Plans and Pricing

Pressa offers the following subscription plans. Each plan defines a monthly compilation quota plus per-document limits on output pages, LaTeX source size, compiled PDF size, compile timeout, and which LaTeX compilers are available:

Compilation quotas reset on the first day of each billing cycle. Unused compilations do not roll over to the next month. Saved template quotas are storage limits and do not reset. Per-document limits (pages, source size, PDF size, timeout, compilers) apply to every individual compile request and do not aggregate. Compile requests that exceed any per-document limit are rejected and do NOT count against your monthly compilation quota. We reserve the right to modify pricing or per-plan limits with 30 days advance notice via email.

5. Payment Terms

• Paid plans are billed monthly in advance via our payment processor, Polar.
• All fees are exclusive of applicable taxes.
• Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis. You may cancel your subscription at any time; your plan remains active until the end of the current billing period.
• If payment fails, we may downgrade your account to the Free plan after a reasonable grace period.

6. API Usage and Rate Limits

• API access requires a valid API key associated with your account.
• Each plan has a monthly compilation quota. Requests exceeding your quota receive a 429 (Too Many Requests) response until the next billing cycle.
• Each plan also has per-document limits enforced on every compile request. Requests that exceed these limits return a structured error response and do NOT count against your monthly quota. Specifically:
  • A 403 (Forbidden) response with error code compiler_not_available if you request a compiler that is not available on your plan (for example, lualatex on Free or Starter)
  • A 413 (Payload Too Large) response with error code latex_too_large if your LaTeX source exceeds the plan's source size limit
  • A 422 (Unprocessable Entity) response with error code page_limit_exceeded if the compiled PDF has more pages than the plan allows; the PDF is not delivered or stored
  • A 422 (Unprocessable Entity) response with error code pdf_too_large if the compiled PDF exceeds the plan's PDF size limit
• We may impose additional per-IP and per-key rate limits (requests per minute) to ensure service stability. Current rate limits are documented in our API documentation.
• Automated or programmatic access must use the API. Scraping the web dashboard is prohibited.
• Each compile request runs in an isolated, ephemeral container with strict memory, CPU, process, and network restrictions. We may terminate any compilation that exceeds these resource limits or that we determine is attempting to circumvent them.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to:

• Generate documents containing illegal, harmful, threatening, or fraudulent content
• Submit LaTeX code designed to exploit, compromise, or disrupt compilation infrastructure
• Attempt to bypass rate limits, authentication, or security measures
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or otherwise attempt to extract the source code of the Service
• Use the Service for cryptocurrency mining or other compute-intensive tasks unrelated to document compilation
• Resell or redistribute the Service without our written consent
• Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Service

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms without prior notice.

8. Data Handling

8.1 Your Content

You retain all rights to the LaTeX source code, JSON data, and saved templates you submit ("Your Content"). By using the Service, you grant Pressa a limited license to process Your Content solely for the purpose of fulfilling your compilation and template storage requests.

8.2 Ephemeral Processing

LaTeX source code submitted for one-off compilation is deleted immediately after compilation. Generated PDFs are stored temporarily and accessible via signed URLs that expire within 24 hours. After expiry, PDFs are permanently deleted from our servers. We do not retain copies of one-off submissions beyond these periods.

8.3 Saved Templates

On paid plans, you may save LaTeX templates to your account for reuse. Saved templates (including name, optional description, and LaTeX content) are stored in our database until you delete them or close your account. Each template is accessible only to the user who created it, authenticated via API key. Upon account closure, all of your saved templates are permanently deleted along with your account.

8.4 No Training

We do not use Your Content to train machine learning models, perform analytics on document content, or for any purpose other than compilation and template storage.

9. Intellectual Property

Pressa and its associated branding, documentation, and software are the intellectual property of Pressa. Your use of the Service does not grant you any rights to our intellectual property beyond the limited right to use the Service as described in these Terms.

You retain full ownership of all documents you create using the Service. Pressa claims no intellectual property rights over your compiled PDFs.

10. Service Availability

• We strive to maintain high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. The Service is provided on an "as available" basis.
• We may perform scheduled maintenance with reasonable advance notice when possible. Emergency maintenance may occur without notice.
• We are not liable for any downtime, data loss, or failed compilations resulting from service interruptions.

11. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, PRESSA AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO PRESSA IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

12. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that compilations will be error-free or that the Service will meet your specific requirements. You are responsible for verifying the output of all compiled documents.

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Pressa and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party rights.

14. Termination

• You may close your account at any time via your dashboard settings.
• We may suspend or terminate your account at any time for violation of these Terms, with or without notice.
• Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Your API keys are revoked and any stored data is deleted per our retention policy.
• Sections 8 through 13 survive termination of these Terms.

15. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from these Terms or the Service shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation before pursuing formal legal proceedings.

16. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes at least 30 days in advance via email or by posting a notice on our website. Your continued use of the Service after the updated Terms take effect constitutes your acceptance of the changes.

17. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
